The legal system is one of the most complex systems in the world. Lawyers, judges, and attorneys all have a long learning process to go through to become proficient. When you are researching a particular field of law, it is important that you find out if they are licensed or not. To find out if a lawyer is properly licensed you can do the following.

In Canada, lawyers must have their license from the Law Society of Upper Canada. All other legal professionals have to be licensed through the Law Society of Lower Canada. Every province that uses a different system will have individual requirements for becoming a lawyer. In addition, all of the legal profession must pass examinations administered by the Law Society of Upper Canada to be able to practice.

When you begin studying the profession, you need to have at least some idea of the differences between the various branches of the discipline. You should begin with an overview of the major categories. The following is a brief description of each of those branches: Civil Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, Maritime Law, Family Practices, and Commercial Law. There are many more which are discussed in textbooks and further study but this gives a good overview of the major ones.

The third category, which is the most popular in civil law countries, is known as property law. This includes contracts, trusts, wills, and property titles. Many times when a dispute arises involving property it is because of contract or estate issues. A common law legal system is one where there is one central government that supervises all courts. The courts are usually organized like the federal government, the provincial court, and local court.

For lawyers who only study criminal law, the definition given above is almost complete. For all other legal systems, all of the components are important. Many times when a criminal case goes to trial, there is a need to present evidence to prove the guilt or innocence of the defendant. Proving this is often part of the role of the prosecutors.

Other legal systems have extended the definition of ‘legal professionals’. In countries like India, lawyers are allowed to practice independently of the state, although the powers they wield are limited. In countries like the United States, lawyers have important rights of freedom of speech and religion and are protected by certain civil and legal protections. The bottom line is that lawyers are very important to the legal system and can make the system run smoothly if they are well rounded. They provide advice, resolve disputes, draft documents, and oversee the constitution and laws of a country.
