UNCW now offers Styrofoam recycling services for the public

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – You can now drop off your Styrofoam packing material on UNCW’s campus for it to be recycled. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is commonly known as “Styrofoam” which is actually the trade name for the foam-like product. We typically see it in the form on to-go food containers, coffee cups, and packing materials. The main building block of EPS is a synthetic chemical called styrene. When EPS deteriorates, styrene can leak and contaminate the environment. According to Mother Nature Network, Americans throw away 25 billion Styrofoam cups a year. It can take 500, or more, years to decompose. The technology to recycle Styrofoam does exist, but the problem is the lack of demand for recycle EPS. EPS material can’t be turned back into cups or boxes like regular plastic or other recyclables. UNCW has found a way to turn the Styrofoam into recyclable material. They have a new Styrofoam densifier; the only one of its kind in New Hanover County. “It’s actually a brand-new program,” says Pete Bloodworth, the manager of UNCW Warehouse Services. “It’s the brainchild of one of the students that was working with Kat and sustainability. We were sitting d...

AC Milan, Kobe Bryant’s favorite Italian soccer team, pays tribute during match

AC Milan and its fans paid tribute to Kobe Bryant with lights and applause before and during Tuesday’s Italian Cup game against Torino at the San Siro stadium. Bryant, who grew up in Italy between the ages of 6 and 13, was a devout Milan fan. The 18-time NBA All-Star with the Lakers died Sunday with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, in a helicopter crash near Calabasas. As Milan and Torino warmed up before the game, the words “Legends Never Die” and “SempreKobe” — a play on the “SempreMilan,” or “AlwaysMilan,” hashtag often used by the club — were displayed on the advertising boards around the San Siro while images of Bryant were shown on the giant screen. Shortly before the teams walked out for the kickoff, the stadium was darkened and the public announcer paid tribute to Bryant while fans applauded and held up phone lights. The song “Who wants to live forever” by Queen was then played. Both soccer teams also wore black armbands. In the 24th minute, fans around the stadium stood to applaud in tribute to Bryant, who wore No. 24. Fans also displayed a banner which read “Rest in peace Kobe and Gianna forever together.” Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimović, who spent nearly two years ...

I am an employee working at a private company on KRS Road, Metagalli. My office is located opposite to Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC). There are two Ready Concrete Mixer Plants operating on the same road. A number of loads of heavy concrete mixers ply on this stretch daily. Half of the road has become unusable for the public because of heaps of concrete droppings, big potholes caused by movement of the heavy mixers and small jelly spilled all over the busy road. It seems these Plants are not following any of the rules set by the Pollution Control Board. Even the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) situated very near to the area is also in deep slumber. I request the officials concerned to take action at least now and help the commuters on this road to have a safe ride. China shutdowns squeeze textile dyeing industry | Dyes & Chemicals News

BEIJING – The global textile dyeing sector is struggling to deal with sky high prices after tougher environmental legislation in China forced the closure of intermediate factories and severely restricted the supply of key ingredient chemicals. New information obtained by Ecotextile News reveals that some of the largest intermediate suppliers in Jiangsu province have shut down completely after a series of environmental transgressions and serious industrial accidents. One supplier told us: “The impacts are huge, and supplies seem likely to get very, very tight. Hopefully the big brands will realise they will now have to pay more for their dyed textile goods.” In some instances, the price of disperse dyes are significantly higher than in 2013 which was historically known as the high price point for textile intermediates – yet today’s prices for some orange shades are even said to be 70 per cent higher than they were back then. Glowforge Says Its New 3D Laser Printer Will Transform Small Businesses

A 3D laser printer company has made upgrades promising to quadruple the profits and output of small businesses using their product.  The new features added to Glowforge products cut down the time to make items.  For example, a customized engraved cutting board went from an hour to 23 minutes. Small Business Trends contacted Dan Shapiro, founder and CEO of Glowforge, to find out how this technology works for small businesses. “Glowforge is a Seattle-based start-up that created the 3D laser printer,” he writes. “Glowforge’s wireless desktop laser makes it simple for designers, artists, and others to take products directly from digital design to reality.” It works with a cloud-based app and a subtractive technology. Most other 3D printers build up material layer by layer. It’s called additive. With Glowforge’s subtractive technology, laser light carves the product out of a raw material like wood or leather.eval(ez_write_tag([[300,250],’smallbiztrends_com-medrectangle-3′,’ezslot_3′,149,’0′,’0′])); Hence the slight name change from 3D printer to 3D laser printer. IIHS Wants Bigger, Harder Crashes for Its Side Impact Tests

While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has gradually evolved its testing procedures since its inception, it has hit the accelerator over the past few years, eager to crash into a new era of knowledge… Alright, so it actually just wanted to assess problematic crash trajectories and headlight safety for insurance companies. Still, they’ve been making meaningful changes in a bid to boost overall safety. On Thursday, the institute said it plans to continue evolving its crash-test procedures. It claims it’s gotten so good at developing side-impact assessments, “the current side ratings no longer help consumers distinguish among vehicles or point the way toward further improvements.” “This is an opportunity to build on what we’ve learned in more than 15 years of side testing,” said IIHS Senior Research Engineer Becky Mueller. “We’ll update the things that need updating, but we don’t need to throw out the things that still work well.” Basically, the group feels the current metrics it uses to assess damage/injury are fine. It plans to use the same dummies and equipment inside the victim car. The only real change is the ferocity of the impact, as it believes the old sta...

To farm more sustainably and profitably, many farmers and contractors are exploring the advantages offered by

To farm more sustainably and profitably, many farmers and contractors are exploring the advantages offered by strip-tilling. Tulloch Farm Machines is looking to meet this demand with a new strip tiller designed to work in pasture — the Strebel SAG 16. Most crops require a fine seedbed for reliable germination, but traditional cultivation can damage the soil structure, while exposed soil can be eroded by wind or rain.  Strip tillers cultivate strips for a seedbed without disturbing the soil between them, so minimising soil damage and retaining moisture which have the potential to increase yields, reduce costs and ultimately result in healthier soil profiles less prone to pugging. Tulloch Farm Machines’ Strebel SAG 16 is based on a subsoiler with rotary hoe blades on either side of the subsoiler leg. The layout is said to break up the soil pan, while the hoe creates an ideal seedbed. The result is a shallow seedbed with shattered ground below, promoting easy root establishment with excellent nutrient and water flows. Waimate contractor Josh Bleeker is into his first season with a Strebel SAG 16 strip tiller, after running other strip tillers for the past two years in his business...
