Tips on Selecting and Replacing Hydraulic Hose Assemblies

Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. Hoses and couplings are critical parts of every hydraulic system. They transfer hydraulic fluid from the pump to machine components such as valves, motors, and actuators which use the fluid pressure and flow to create the machine motion and force needed to do work. The importance of selecting or replacing hydraulic hoses and couplings often gets overlooked…until something goes wrong. Hydraulic hoses might look simple but they are carefully engineered multi-component assemblies that include reinforcements, a tube to carry the fluid, and a cover to protect both the reinforcements and tube. The reinforcements, for example, can vary depending on the pressure levels the hose will experience, as these hoses from Gates show. Most hoses have three functional layers—the tube, reinforcements, and the cover—assembled in a flexible “laminate design” or “composite structure.” Being flexible lets the hose move, flex, easily route through bulkheads, da...

Lewiston’s fight against its ‘truly uncooperative’ landlords — Maine Focus — Bangor Daily News — BDN Maine

Editor’s note: This is part of an ongoing series about Lewiston housing. Ideas? Write to mainefocus@bangordailynews.com. See all the stories here. As the mold grew around the leak in Maria and Jonathan Knapp’s bathroom ceiling, so did the smell that came with it, which was so strong it sometimes made Jonathan vomit. And when it rained, water ran down the walls and onto the lap of anyone who happened to be sitting on the toilet. Like the smell and the mold, the leak at the apartment at 125 Pine St. in Lewiston grew slowly over the 15 months the Knapps’ landlord failed to fix the issue, according to court filings. The leak was relatively small when Portland investor and lender Scott Lalumiere purchased the apartment building in April 2017. He then transferred it to SK Housing LLC, which he owned with Kevin Fletcher, then the president of the Maine Commercial Association of Realtors. In addition to the Knapps’ building, the men’s companies had bought a number of rental properties in downtown Lewiston, where, almost a decade after the financial crisis, multifamily residential buildings could still be acquired for a fraction of their pre-crash value. Lalumiere scooped up the building...

Why Your Hydraulic Machine Probably Needs an Oil Cooler—and a Big One!

This site is operated by a business or businesses owned by Informa PLC and all copyright resides with them. Informa PLC’s registered office is 5 Howick Place, London SW1P 1WG. Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. The inconvenient truth about hydraulic machines is they are heat-generating systems. They are not unique in this respect: Energy conversion and control with 100% efficiency remains elusive. But it’s my contention that unavoidable inefficiency, which manifests as energy contamination of the hydraulic fluid, does not command the attention it deserves. With the exception of the reservoir, every component in a hydraulic system is a heat-generating device. The process of moving hydraulic fluid through a conductor from A to B results in pressure drop and, therefore, heat generation. Installing depth filters to control particle contamination also creates a pressure drop, which increases heat load. Pumps and motors leak internally, resulting still more heat-generating pressure drops. The charge pump on a hydrostatic transmission is 100% heat load. In open circuits, heat-generating orifices, throttles (in all their various forms), and hydrostats are installed...

CHICAGO — Color does not have flavor, yet consumers associate certain flavors with colors. A red carbonated water should not taste like lemon, while a yellow one would be thought to have citrus, maybe sour or tart notes. Because we eat and drink with our eyes, color is important. And not just color, but the shade of a color and the type of product. In beverages, brown is a strange color. It is not associated with any fruit or vegetable, except maybe overripe bananas or oxidized greens (coffee is a fruit, technically). Different flavors and types of beverages are associated with brown. The obvious are cola, coffee, tea and chocolate milk, as well as beer and some spirits. And, while such beverages as spicy tomato juice and pumpkin spice latte are not brown, the hue may be added — directly or indirectly through the blending of other colors — to provide an element of richness, maybe even the look of the savory, delicious taste of umami. “Aside from traditional colas and sodas, brewed teas and tea-based beverages benefit from the addition of brown colors,” said Meghan Fox, marketing specialist, Sensient Food Colors, St. Louis. “The addition of the brown hues conveys the shades of mo...

Such is the ordeal of finding a home to rent or buy in Canada that when

Such is the ordeal of finding a home to rent or buy in Canada that when we zeroed in on a couple of newcomer families who were in the midst of house hunting, they did not really want to speak about their experiences. They were simply too stressed out! “The first eight months in Canada were a nightmare for us,” recounts Satish Pandya (name changed for privacy), who bought a home in Mississauga this fall with his wife and five-year-old son. “Initially we thought about renting because we were told that we do not have a strong credit history in the country to qualify for a mortgage. But we were stunned by the steep rental rates — we were paying $2,100 for a two-bedroom apartment!” he says. After much debate with his wife about putting down a healthy amount for their down payment and being realistic about what their first home should be (he wanted a detached, but his wife convinced him to go for a less lavish semi), the Pandyas finally settled on a semi-detached home in a reputable school district. “At least we aren’t bleeding money on rent. Though the monthly mortgage payments are going to be slightly stressful, we are hoping to manage,” he says. Some interesting stats came up recen...

Russell Crimp-Fit Hose Technology Comes To The Racer’s Shop

Reliable race plumbing is a crucial component in movement of cooling, fuel supply, oil and other liquids throughout your car. Hoses and related hose end fittings are an application that many racers do not cut corners on when it comes to preventing any leakage. A simple drip spotted by a starting line official may stop your day of racing, or even worse, a significant leak can cause an oildown with catastrophic consequences. Many racers rely on crimped hose ends to provide leak-free reliability in their AN-style fittings and related high-pressure hoses. With this level of plumbing hardware, most race fabricators are accustomed to contacting their motorsport hose supplier of choice to custom order section of plumbing by providing the required length, fitting size and unique “clocking” specification for each hose. Russell Performance, a division of Edelbrock, has developed its ProClassic Crimp-On hose end program. These hose ends offer the advantages of permanently crimped AN fittings that can be custom assembled in your own shop. We fabricated a Flex-A-Lite fan-powered transmission cooler within the interior panel between our rear wheel tubs of our Project Rover bracket Camaro, whi...

Gary Sanchez’s improvement behind the plate paying off for Yankees catcher

Adam Ottavino knew the reputation. Zack Britton had not heard good things. The mistakes of a young catcher have been dogging Gary Sanchez his whole career. So the two relievers came to the Yankees a little wary of working with the 26-year old. “For me, you never know what to expect coming in with a new catcher. I know there’s been a narrative about his catching. I thought he’s been pretty awesome the whole year,” Ottavino said. “It only took him like three games in spring training to figure out kind of my MO and just kind of go from there. He’s real easy to talk to. He works really hard. He pays attention. I’m guessing he’s come a long way, but I think he’s doing a pretty good job.” Sanchez is known for his ability to unleash power at the plate. But with the Yankees planning to be so aggressive with their bullpen, they are putting a lot of their postseason hopes on Sanchez’s plate to not only deliver offensively, but to guide power-pitchers with different tendencies every night. He had a bounce-back season after a nightmare 2018 at the plate and behind it. Last year, the catcher could not have had a worse season. Battling a nagging groin injury, the catcher hit just .186 with a ...
