Nano to pico to femto: Pulse widths for optimal laser micromachining outcomes

While several laser parameters affect the machining results, the choice of pulse width is one of the important factors that affect the precision, throughput, quality, and economics of the process. The goal of any machining process is to achieve the desired high-quality results in the shortest time possible and in the most economical way. Laser machining, compared to conventional mechanical machining techniques such as cutting, milling, and drilling, can achieve localized, high-quality, and precise machining. With the right choice of laser, one can also achieve a high-yield, high-throughput, and economical process. One industry where lasers are heavily used is in manufacturing mobile devices. The demand to make smaller, faster, lighter, and lower-cost mobile devices has required laser micromachining processes that can meet this challenge. Other industries, such as medical device manufacturing, clean energy, automotive, and aerospace, have also adopted laser machining to varying degrees. While several laser parameters affect the machining results, the choice of pulse width is one of the important factors that affect the precision, throughput, quality, and economics of the process....

Generally speaking, the steel flanges refer to the joints specially used for connecting pipes. For example, two steel pipes with a diameter of 100 can be connected by welding or electric welding. Once welded, it is not easy to disassemble unless it is cut by a cutter or Electric welding to cut open. However, if a flange (usually a round flange) is used, a gasket seal can be added and then fixed with a screw cap. It can also be easily disassembled when the pipeline fails or is overhauled. In addition, if there are flanges on both sides of the large gate valve switch, it is convenient to remove the switch. The Welding neck flanges is normally referred to as the high hub flange. It is designed to transfer stresses to the pipe, thereby reducing high stress concentrations at the base of the flange. A weld neck flange (also known as a high-hub flange and tapered hub flange) is a type of flange. There are two designs. The regular type is used with pipes. The long type is unsuitable for pipes and is used in process plant. A weld neck flange consists of a circular fitting with a protruding rim around the circumference. Generally machined from a forging, these flanges are typically butt w...

Rochester windstorm: Henrietta, Chili residents in roofing nightmare

For months following Rochester’s major March windstorm, thousands of residents across the area dealt with the aftermath of winds that left many homes stripped of roofing shingles. But for residents of several neighborhoods south of Rochester, the windstorm was merely the last blow after years of roofing issues. March 8 started out as a normal, sunny, 50-degree day in Rochester. Ginny Ingrim, who lives in the Longleaf subdivision in Henrietta, was at home, fixing her hair at her bathroom mirror. Danette Campbell-Bell was driving to her house in another Henrietta neighborhood. Within minutes, a ferocious wind arrived and ripped through snaking streets filled with houses built by Faber Homes, sending debris and garbage cans tumbling through backyards. But that wasn’t what caught the eye of Ingrim and Campbell-Bell. “I’m watching out the window and there are shingles flying through the air,” said Ingrim. “It was like the tornado scene in the Wizard of Oz.” Homeowners in Henrietta and Chili subdivisions are replacing more and more shingles to homes less than 10 years old. “It literally looked like someone tore the roofs off,” said one homeowner. Bausch Health Companies – The Little Engine That Could

Shrewd M&A activity and R&D spending growth could help fuel future growth as the company goes on the offensive. Bausch Health Companies Inc. (BHC) plans to finally return to revenue growth in 2019 as the bloodshed looks to be coming to an end for the company even as it works to slowly resolve its legacy massive debt issues. With smart M&A decisions backed by a growing R&D budget, fueling future growth is becoming more of a concern for the company as growing revenues and a declining debt load could eventually result in a full rerating of the stock, albeit maybe still years in the future. Bausch’s core eye care business continues its solid performance with slow growth on over 50% of the company’s revenue streams while the company’s “Significant Seven” new product launches will be one of the keys to sustained revenue growth over the next 4 years. Revenues are expected to double for the seven in 2019 to ~$300M, with the goal of peak revenue streams of over $1B by the end of 2022. Bausch’s Salix division is the other key catalyst to creating greater future growth for the company. Bausch bought Salix back in 2015 in an almost $15B de...

Based in Rochester, N.Y., Acro Industries could have stayed a small tool and die shop, growing on work from local corporate giants Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, along with a variety of companies throughout the Northeast. That said, those three Rochester corporations are very different from what they were in the 1970s. If Acro stayed the same it might not have survived, or at least grown to the 150-plus-employee company it is today. If you walk into a shop and see stamping, fabricating, welding, and machining, you can often guess the backstory. A tool and die shop with machining expertise added stamping (or vice versa), which then added metal fabrication equipment like laser/punch machines and press brakes to tackle high-mix, low-volume work. But if you walk into Acro’s plant, besides all of that you’d also see a comprehensive assembly operation as well as an area with odd-shaped presses using special adhesives to bond a honeycomb structure between two aluminum skins. That backstory isn’t so easy to guess. What makes a shop stand out from the crowd? In the short term it’s price, of course, though if the shop can’t maintain quality and delivery at a certain low price, it d...
