Bausch Health Companies – The Little Engine That Could

Shrewd M&A activity and R&D spending growth could help fuel future growth as the company goes on the offensive. Bausch Health Companies Inc. (BHC) plans to finally return to revenue growth in 2019 as the bloodshed looks to be coming to an end for the company even as it works to slowly resolve its legacy massive debt issues. With smart M&A decisions backed by a growing R&D budget, fueling future growth is becoming more of a concern for the company as growing revenues and a declining debt load could eventually result in a full rerating of the stock, albeit maybe still years in the future. Bausch’s core eye care business continues its solid performance with slow growth on over 50% of the company’s revenue streams while the company’s “Significant Seven” new product launches will be one of the keys to sustained revenue growth over the next 4 years. Revenues are expected to double for the seven in 2019 to ~$300M, with the goal of peak revenue streams of over $1B by the end of 2022. Bausch’s Salix division is the other key catalyst to creating greater future growth for the company. Bausch bought Salix back in 2015 in an almost $15B de...

Based in Rochester, N.Y., Acro Industries could have stayed a small tool and die shop, growing on work from local corporate giants Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb, along with a variety of companies throughout the Northeast. That said, those three Rochester corporations are very different from what they were in the 1970s. If Acro stayed the same it might not have survived, or at least grown to the 150-plus-employee company it is today. If you walk into a shop and see stamping, fabricating, welding, and machining, you can often guess the backstory. A tool and die shop with machining expertise added stamping (or vice versa), which then added metal fabrication equipment like laser/punch machines and press brakes to tackle high-mix, low-volume work. But if you walk into Acro’s plant, besides all of that you’d also see a comprehensive assembly operation as well as an area with odd-shaped presses using special adhesives to bond a honeycomb structure between two aluminum skins. That backstory isn’t so easy to guess. What makes a shop stand out from the crowd? In the short term it’s price, of course, though if the shop can’t maintain quality and delivery at a certain low price, it d...

Staff shortage increases overtime at Minnesota prisons

The Minnesota Department of Corrections almost doubled the overtime it paid prison staff in the past year because of a chronic staff shortage and concern for employee safety. The state’s DOC data shows it paid $12.3 million for more than 262,000 hours of overtime during fiscal year 2019. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that’s up from the year before when the DOC paid $6.9 million of overtime for 150,000 hours. State Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell said the agency increased its overtime use after two officers died last year. Corrections officer Joseph Gomm was allegedly bludgeoned to death by an inmate in Stillwater prison in July 2018. Officer Joe Parise died during a medical emergency two months later while responding to an attack on a colleague at Oak Park Heights. “We incurred a significant amount of overtime as a result of that,” Schnell said. “Everything that happens (in prison) requires security personnel, and that has been the place where we’ve had the biggest challenges.” The DOC had 113 officer vacancies as of Sept. 17. A total of 240 corrections officers left during fiscal year 2019, making for a turnover rate of 12.4%...

In the shadow of his famous father, Jerry Jones’ son guides the Dallas Cowboys and other

In the shadow of his famous father, Jerry Jones’ son guides the Dallas Cowboys and other businesses in the family’s multibillion-dollar enterprise. There was never any doubt that Jerry Jones and his oldest son Stephen would become business partners someday. When Stephen was a student and football player at the University of Arkansas, Jerry would visit and they’d map out business dreams so late into the night that Jerry would sometimes sleep on the dorm room floor or in a roommate’s bunk. Although Stephen had other scholarship offers—including one to Princeton where he and Coach Jason Garrett would likely have been teammates—he was dying to be a Razorback like his father, and grew up hearing stories about his dad and his teammates winning national championships. Stephen would go on to letter all four years. Along the way, he also earned a degree in chemical engineering. The plan was that he would eventually assume leadership in his father’s oil business and would learn everything there was to know about the industry. “I believe in blurred lines,” Jerry says. “I like for the key people to be able to cross over lines. I like for them to be involved in several disciplines. You say,...

Here’s our latest list of the biggest parts suppliers AN-LOGO-BLUE AN-LOGO-BLUE

The supplier world is rushing into new technologies to deliver the grand vision of the auto industry – widespread electrified powertrains and advanced safety and convenience technologies that will allow vehicles to steer, accelerate and brake themselves. But that transformation isn’t having any noticeable effect on the global pecking order of the industry’s biggest parts companies. To be considered for Automotive News’ 2020 top suppliers list, submit the following information by Dec. 31 to [email protected]. The annual Automotive News ranking of the top global suppliers reveals that as the industry’s main players build revenue, transform and change direction, they remain in much the same order of size as they were a year ago. Bosch, Denso, Magna, Continental and ZF Friedrichshafen remain the world’s five biggest suppliers, in the same order on the Automotive News list as a year ago. Only two of the top 10 – Valeo and Faurecia – changed rankings last year. They swapped positions on the list, with Faurecia No. 9 and Valeo No. 10. The main reason suppliers, for the most part, are keeping their spots as the biggest of the big? Wealth. The co...

Mum, 33, jokes she ‘went from Daisy the cow to Pamela Anderson in minutes’ thanks to ‘boob lifting stickers’

News Corp is a network of leading companies in the worlds of diversified media, news, education, and information services. A MUM-OF-THREE has joked that thanks to some “invisible breast lifting stickers”, she went from “Daisy the cow to Pamela Anderson” in minutes. Laura Mazza, 33, from Melbourne, has done a hilarious review of the bunny-shaped product which aims to give boobs a lift – and said while they worked at first, the night ended in disaster. She explained on Facebook: “I felt convinced that t*t rabbits would lift my three children breastfeeding boobs that now resemble tennis balls in old socks, so I purchased. “I got the delivery and peeled off the protective layer and lift up my meatless lost dreams of hope (my boobs) and apply the t*t bunnies to both. They seemed to work.” However, Laura found herself in a tricky situation when one bunny sticker fell off during the night leaving her with uneven boobs. She said: “[But] an hour into my outing, at a very busy venue, wearing a very low cut top sporting two pushed up cat flaps… I began to feel loose. “Looking like I had a stroke, with one perfect looking shoulder boulder and the other looking like a bacon hanger, I ...

A roundup of recent products in the GNSS and inertial positioning industry from the September 2019

A roundup of recent products in the GNSS and inertial positioning industry from the September 2019 issue of GPS World magazine. Arvento’s imt.x1 has a six-axis gyro sensor that can sense three-dimensional movement caused by emergency acceleration, panic braking and directional yaw and drift. With connectivity options including dual CANBus and Bluetooth, the system is eCall compatible and captures and provides data for accident analysis and other vehicle tracking functions. The system also uses the next-generation powerful Arm-based microcontroller. The system’s high position sensitivity and accuracy are based on integration of u-blox’s 2G, 4G and 5G-ready cellular modules as well as GNSS modules. The compact LC79D module features concurrent multi-constellation GNSS receivers on dual GNSS bands. It uses L1 and L5 for GPS, Galileo and QZSS, L1 band for GLONASS and BeiDou, and L5 band for IRNSS. It can generally increase the number of visible satellites, significantly improve positioning drifting when driving in urban canyons and enhance positioning accuracy. Embedded with a low-noise amplifier (LNA) and multi-tone active interference, the module provides high sensitivity and relia...

Interest in products like smart speakers, lights and security systems is going high thanks to voice commands. One of the unexpected success stories in connected devices over the last two years has been voice-activated speakers. Though Amazon’s first Alexa-enabled device, the Fire Phone, was a flop, the Echo speaker launched a few months later became Amazon’s most innovative product since the Kindle e-reader. This spawned several copycats, including models from competitors Google and Apple that now appear to be having a big impact on smart home adoption. A paper from eMarketer shows more consumers are now aware of smart home devices. About 12 percent of consumers said in a survey that they are already using smart home products and 33 percent are very likely to use them in the future. The biggest incentive for adopting smart home technology right now is convenience and security. Products like ther...
